directed seven episodes in the first season and two in the second: THE TIME OF THE KNIFE, WEIGHT OF THE WORLD, THREE HOURS ON A SUNDAY NIGHT, THE TIGER, TURKISH DELIGHT, THE CONQUEST OF MAUDE MURDOCH, ONE THOUSAND FINE, SO COLDLY SWEET, LORI, SPARROWHAWK & LITTLE BOY LOST. He has a long film career, beginning with the GIDGET movies and including HONOR THY FATHER, THE CHASE, the controversial LIZZIE BORDEN, CELEBRITY, THE FLIGHT, and recently, A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN.

ALF KJELLIN (1920 - 1988)
directed nine episodes, all in the second season: VENDETTA, A GIFT FROM ALEXANDER, ROME TAKE AWAY THREE (where he can also be seen as Dean Sherman), BRIDGE OF SPIES, TONIA, CHILD OUT OF TIME, THE WAR LORD, GET THEE TO A NUNNERY & BLACKOUT. In fact, he began his career as an actor, appearing in the 1946 film TORMENT. His TV directorial credits include 12 O'CLOCK HIGH, THE WALTONS, CONBAT and HAWAII FIVE O.

directed episodes with Japanese and Spanish locations - CHRYSANTHEMUM, TATIA, A ROOM WITH A RACK, MAINLY ON THE PLAINS (which he also wrote with Mort Fine) & NIGHT TRAIN TO MADRID. He also directed location shooting for a number of the Asian episodes.

LEO PENN (1922 - 1998)
The distinguished director got the fledgling series off the ground with SO LONG PATRICK HENRY, A CUP OF KINDNESS, DRAGONS TEETH & NO EXCHANGE ON DAMAGED MERCHANDISE. He also appeared before the camera as Dr. Minores in A ROOM WITH A RACK. His films include A MAN CALLED ADAM and JUDGMENT IN BERLIN. He has directed over 400 television programs, including BEN CASEY, STAR TREK, COLUMBO, CAGNEY & LACEY, THE BIONIC WOMAN, DIAGNOSIS MURDER and the MATLOCK films. He began his career as an actor, and like many people associated with "I Spy", he suffered as a victim of the Blacklist. In 1995 he returned to acting, in son Sean Penn's directorial debut THE CROSSING GUARD.

MARK RYDELL (born 1934)
worked on the Hong Kong episodes: CARRY ME BACK TO OLD TSING TAO, THE LOSER & DANNY WAS A MILLION LAUGHS. He has moved fluidly between direction and acting, most notably as director of ON GOLDEN POND, FOR THE BOYS, CINDERALLA LIBERTY and THE COWBOYS. His acting roles include THE LONG GOODBYE, PUNCHLINE and HAVANNA. Also a jazz pianist, his television directing included GUNSMOKE, BEN CASEY and THE FUGITIVE.

ALLAN REISNER (1924 - 2004)
directed three of the Japanese episodes: TIGERS OF HEAVEN, THE BARTER & ALWAYS SAY GOODBYE. His feature film credits include "All Mine to Give" and "St. Louis Blues." He won acclaim for his direction of the mini series "Captains and the Kings" and also directed episodes of series Cannon, Murder She Wrote,Kojak, Mannix, Kung Fu, Night Gallery, Ironside, The Green Hornet, Gunsmoke, The Untouchables, The Twilight Zone"and "Rawhide."

ROBERT BUTLER (born 1927)
directed four second-season episodes: IT'S ALL DONE WITH MIRRORS, SOPHIA & the two-part TO FLORENCE WITH LOVE. His other directorial work includes STAR TREK and BATMAN.

TOM GRIES (1922 - 1977)
did two episodes: THE TROUBLE WITH TEMPLE & MAGIC MIRROR. A journalist, talent agent, producer and writer, his directorial work includes NUMBER ONE, THE HAWAIIANS, HELTER SKELTER, THE GLASS HOUSE, THE CONNECTION, BREAKOUT and the Muhammed Ali movie THE GREATEST. He died of a heart attact while editing the latter film. His TV work includes COMBAT.
