So it seems fairly clear to me that the character of Sean Christy is based on Flynn, while the attack his band of merry men is about to lead is, of course, meant to recall the ill-fated "Bay of Pigs" invasion -- about which nothing more need be said.
I like this episode, but leave the grading to Jahbad.

So I think what the writers were doing in CRUSADE TO LIMBO

Great to read everyone's comments re this episode- yes the scenery was stunning - all those red balloons were magnificent on DVD.
Colonel, Chichen Itza is on the Yucatan Peninsula about 4 hours from Cancun - I have been twice: it is really something to see. Now that Americans seem to be persona non grata in Egypt (that really is not new) - if one wishes to see wonderful pyramids and climb them, then I strongly advise Chichen Itza.
Both times when I was there- I climbed the INSIDE which was less frightening than that outside stairway - the steps are not wide enough to plant ones`s foot straight- thus one has to step sideways - an extremely disconcerting feeling. I managed about 12 feet on the outside then came back down; (the great pyramid is about 11 stories high).
My friend climbed to the top, looked down, froze and couldn't move- this was a long time ago and she was wearing very cute shorts - twenty Mexicans volunteered to help her down- they actually had a bet to see who would win the honor.
I stood at the bottom wringing my hands.

Bill W. noted that Howard Duff had played Sam Spade on radio, which is true. He also was married for some years to the great Ida Lupino -- actress, and pioneering director. I once saw Duff on stage in a production of Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon's BORN YESTERDAY. He played the role made famous on screen by Broderick Crawford. He was very good in it. Duff did a number of interesting film appearances (e.g. SHAKEDOWN), and later worked a great deal in television (I recall an episode of the Rockford Files in which he was quite good).
I read Billy Bob's remarks that his character of 'Sean Christy' is meant to recall Errol Flynn. I think this is probably true, but Duff fails to come across as a screen swashbuckler of any sort,
as I think Col.Benkovski also suggested.

OK ... we were all been blown away by the magnificence of the Mexican pyramid scenes - apparently it touched us all in a similar way .... something about "standing" at the top of that pyramid - the unbelievable view, the vastness of the quiet countryside, almost feeling a cool breeze - almost as if you were there -
- and the scene prior to that with Kelly and Scotty talking and strolling together around the pyramid grounds (mmm - that walk of Culp`s!!) - his great suede jacket - Scotty sporting a precursor of a Dr. Huxtable sweater!!!), finally reaching that impressive structure, and looking way up to see Shawn waving to them from the far distance high at the top .... then the long, long climb up the steep stairs ... eventually approaching the top tier, Kelly removing his jacket - slightly winded from his labors (perhaps he shouldn`t have waited 30 years to stop smoking) ... and finally reaching the top - that view - incredible .... !!!
SO "boys and girls".... let`s take a poll here .... how DID the "guys" really get to the top?? ... their own leg power or helicopter ...??? (Do they even allow helicopters near those ancient structures??) - but hey, we are talking about big-time, prime-time TV stars with contracts and insurance policies and everything) ??? .... and if the steps are as steep as has been described (and they sure looked it) this wasn`t an easy hop ... and then they had to get down too! So what do you think ... ??
A "Day Called 4 Jaguar" next??? - hope somebody finally has a handle on that title ....
Jahbad, I don`t know if you have seen lots of the past postings, but there is a great Hagen website done by one of the Forum members called the "Best of All Worlds - A Salute to Earle Hagen" - it includes Mr. Hagen`s speech from the ASMAC (American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers) dinner honoring him last year (and "The Big Guy" himself - yes, Kelly Robinson in person - presented the award) ... and there`s lots of other great "stuff" on the site too ... check it out:
