Synopsis: A young scientist volunteers to be captured by Russians.
Highlights/Comments: Tony Bill looked too young. Episode started to build with appearance of father. Kelly's comment “There've been times when I've enjoyed your work. This isn't one of them.” … “You're a great superspy yourself.”
I SPY REVISITED
My original observations held firm on this one. One has the feeling that, as the series progressed, it became more and more difficult to produce weighty scripts, and the fare became commonplace.
Not only was it a preposterous premise that if one walked about in rome for a day acting drunk, the opposing forces would immediately capture the young scientist, but Kelly and Scotty's mock interrogation was no more convincing. Direction a bit stilted with padded and elongated scenes. Outdoor scenes around the villa needed some night sound effects to be realistic.
A few extra amusing moments …..
With Scotty still out cold after Gary's kidnapping, Kelly comes to and answers the phone. Dazed, he tells the party that he'll ring back, then says, “yeah, I know, you're the American consul. You know who I am? I'm the guy who's going to call you back in a few minutes.” He then throws a wet towel over Scotty's face to bring him around. “Have I ever done that to you,” Scotty objects, showing a sign of life, then adds, “you just wait til I wake up first one time.” Commenting on the incident they weren't planning on, Scotty says, “This proves that espionage is a combination of careful planning and skilful execution.” ….. After the gunfight, noting Scotty's wound, Kelly says, “I thought I told you always to duck.” And Scotty replies, “well I did, but I think I paused a little bit too long.” Kelly reassures, “fortunately, I brought my rusty-trusty pen knife for minor surgery.”
