In the llobby, Elroy spots them immediately, calling out jovially, “hey, it's Patrick Henry, right?” and “how's the patriotism business?” to which Scotty sardonically replies “Well, well, as I live and breathe, it's the late great Elroy Brown.”
|
Cutting in, the Chinese guard attempts to pull Elroy away, but he reacts sharply to the intervention, saying “hey, what do you want, a rap in the mouth? Now step to the rear!”
Then “C'mon, back Charlie!” The Chinese guard withdraws silently but angrily...

As he departs, Elroy explains, “they're all right. You just have to step on them once in a while …. Let them know which end of the bus they belong in, you know what I mean?”
|
“Looks like you've got the world by the tail, Elroy,” ventures Scotty. Elroy counters a bit nervously, “you know what happened to the guy who grabbed the tiger by the tail? But in the meantime, it's quite a ride.” He goes on to introduce his fiancée to Scotty and Kelly, first asking Scotty's proper name. Very friendly, he says that he saw Kelly play tennis. They are again interrupted, this time by the head of the Chinese team, Mr. Tsung, saying that they must register. “Well, do it,” answers Elroy angrily. “What do you want me to do, carry your bags?” Tsung departs, as Elroy mutters, “knucklehead.” After he leaves, another Chinese takes a picture of the group, and Scotty comments, “You better not let go of that tail, man.”

Elroy laughs uproariously. And says “you're all right, Patrick. You know, it's a funny thing. You won't believe this, but I never forgot about you. Never forgot our little talk either, even though I didn't talk much.”

“You made up for it. You yawned a lot,” answers Scotty, to which Elroy replies ruefully, “Yeah, I did, didn't I?” Then more philosophically, Well, it's a little late to be raking over the ashes.” With a hint of their mission, Scotty says solemnly, maybe not,”

The Chinese have taken note of the conversation, and Tsung rejoins Elroy who tries to prolong the meeting against his wishes . Amara suggests getting together with Kelly and Scotty later. Elroy welcomes the idea, but Tsung says it's impossible. “Will you shut up!” Elroy retorts. While Kelly and Scotty appear uncertain, Elroy says, “don't pay any attention to Charlie Chan here. Give him a fortune cookie, and he goes away happy.”

After agreeing to meet later, Scotty and Kelly watch Elroy's party disappear into the elevator, and Kelly remarks “that's a pretty dangerous game he's playing, whatever it is.” Scotty answers gravely, “it's not a game he's playing. He was rolling drunks in the streets of Chicago when he was 12. A little luck and less talent, he could have gone to the gas chamber.”
