In the next scene, Kelly and Scotty are waiting in the bar for Elroy. After Mickey the bellboy informs them that Elroy has gone to his room, they decide he's not coming. Then Tsung comes into the bar, looks around, then tells Kelly and Scotty that Elroy is detained, and can't meet them. He's lost Elroy,” Kelly observes when Tsung departs. As they leave the bar, Mickey sslips them a note saying “Go out the front. Take a cab.” It's signed “007.”
Out front, Elroy and Amara are waiting for them in a taxi. "Let's paint the town ," invites Elroy, glass in hand.

In the next scene, on the water, Elroy jokes about how he `s done this before, evading the Chinese, then suggests they go ashore. In a bar he tells how they got away via cage elevators at a Rome hotel right before the eyes of the Chinese. In a high mood, he says, “and I yelled, tag fellas, you're it.”

While Kelly shows amusement, Scotty is glum. After hearing how the couple stole 24 hours alone in Rome, Kelly asks, “they never let you out?” Elroy replies, “”well, I'm their champion show dog. I might catch fleas …. Yeah, but I'm gonna put some of these guys in straight jackets this trip.”

Time passes and the mood has changed. Kelly apparently brings up the subject of their assignment, and Elroy says dismissively, “politics, you gotta be kidding.” Scotty retorts, “he's not kidding, man. He's asking you straight. Now, you want to go on putting us on like Tokyo? Then we're gonna let you have the bar to yourself."
|
|
Elroy replies, "“Listen, I ain't got any politics. You want to know what I got? I got a quarter of a million dollars in a Swiss bank. That's what I've got. A couple more years with these punks, and I go and collect it. Tax free. See, the Rams wanted me for fifty grand, and the Eagles offered me forty. From there on down hill. Now this was the best offer. I'm the first bonus baby in the cold war. That's my politics, sweetheart."

““You did it for money,” says Scotty with quiet outrage. “Yeah, that's the general idea,” retorts Elroy. “What's that tone coming out of your mouth? Who do you think you are?” Kelly answers quietly, “he knows who he is, Elroy. It's you we're not too sure of.”
|
Elroy's tone changes, and he says that the subject is “ancient history.” Raising his glass, he says merrily, “let's talk about something friendly. Here's to friendly.”
Meanwhile, the Chinese have been monitoring Elroy's activities. They've located him, and get in a taxi to the bar where the four are drinking.

Dancing together, Amara tells Elroy, “I wish you could have known my grandfather. He was a great and foolish man. He was a king. He built a nation where there was nothing. He made mistakes like all men, and like all men, the larger the mistake, the more fierce he would become at trying to prove to himself that he was right. He would never beg, bend, and so, in the end, he was broken. Yet his people always loved him. They understood. A king is like that. “ In response to her perceptive analogy to his own situation, Elroy asks, “ how can a little country girl be so hip?” She responds, “Elroy. It means the king.”
