Having located Elroy, the Chinese are on the move, but in the bar, Elroy observes, “well, you're awfully glum there, Patrick. for such a great talker.” Scotty answers, “I said it all. A year ago.” Awaiting more, Elroy says, “yeah, you talked my head off in Tokyo. Now you clams up.” Kelly interjects, “you don't make anything easy, do you.”
“I was talking to Patrick,” Elroy snaps at Kelly. “Bud out!” Scotty, incensed, rises to go. “Hold it!” Elroy calls sharply.
“For what?” Scotty answers, with anger. “Please,” says Amara in a conciliatory tone. “He doesn't want to hear anything we have to say, Princess,” Kelly says politely. “It just wouldn't interest him.”
Amara appeals to Kelly and Scotty to say their piece, then Elroy says, “well somebody say something! The sun's coming up. C'mon, let's have it. Let's have the pitch.”
“The pitch,” Scotty mutters in disgust, and Kelly says, “no, we don't want to tempt you. You made a right decision, Elroy. Stick to it. If you came home, how could you make a quarter of a million tax free playing pro ball? “ Maybe I'll be a movie star,” responds Elroy sarcastically. “All right, that's enough needles. What's the proposition?”
“You wouldn't like it,” Scotty replies. “Go on to Switzerland. Collect your money. In 20 years from now, you'll be sitting in some villa on the side of the hill watching the sun set, drinking a martini. Got the whole thing licked. Back home, a lot of dummies not as smart as you are will be eating their hearts out, trying to make the law of the land stick. Holding the country together with one hand, and trying to clean their own house with the other. Yeah, something no country's done before. Never in the history of the world! Go on, Elroy, go on to Switzerland. You don't need that kind of grief.
“Holy wars are a pain in the neck, man. They always have been,” adds Kelly. What can you do about it anyway? You're only one man. What can one man do? They've got a phrase for that, Elroy. So simple, it may sound a little childish to you. `The journey of a thousand miles begins with but a single step.' Remember the man who said that? Remember him? And a dozen other men And a dozen men right now picking up where they left off. They'll be remembered. So will you. You're the fellow that went away laughing at all of them.”
“The whole world's trying to keep bloody fools like you from selling themselves back into slavery,” says Scotty, getting a strong but silent reaction from Elroy. Scotty goes on, “But you did it anyway. You gotta laugh at that. No deals, Elroy. Nothin'. You get your citizenship and a plane ticket home. After that, you're on your own.”
“It's not very much of a deal,” Elroy responds resignedly. “It's a lousy deal,” Scotty says. “What do you want, a medal?” As they are being observed , Elroy admits, “no, I don't want any medals. But it doesn't make much sense to do it for nothin' either.” Kelly replies, “it's not exactly for nothing.” Elroy asks, “for what then?” Kelly suggests, “how about for your almighty soul? How about for that?”
“I don't have much belief in my almighty soul, pal,” says Elroy, and Scotty asks sternly, “then what have we been talking about?” Elroy shows he understands, but obviously doesn't want to accept. He gets up, and suggests they go outside for some air. “Make up your mind, Elroy!” Scotty insists. “Now, or we can't help you,” Kelly adds softly. “I don't need your help!” Elroy states emphatically, and Kelly replies in the same low tone, “you don't need any help. You need a seeing eye dog.”
“Don't push me,” Elroy snarls back, but Kelly points out the man who's been observing them. “These people have an army in this town. They're going to be outside waiting for us. Now, we link arms, and exit laughing. If we're lucky, they'll buy it as another harmless prank. If not, it's been pointless knowing you.” They then do exactly that, and leave the bar acting drunk.

Outside, Tsung is waiting with a car and umbrella. He reminds Elroy that his conference address is in a few hours, and that Elroy and Amara should return with him. Kelly and Scotty drunkenly say they'll get the couple back to the hotel, and Elroy insists on walking. The Chinese heavy then arrives in another car, looking menacing. Eventually, they get in the car, and Kelly and Scotty drunkenly bid them farewell.
After they're gone, Kelly suggests a walk in the rain, having noted a taxi around the corner with the lights out. The driver calls out to them, and they get in. The next moment, he is pointing a revolver at them. Gunshots are heard, but it is the driver who slumps. “Don't you ever remember to bring a silencer?” Kelly asks. “It ruins the line of my suit,” Scotty responds.
