Tatia and Kelly take a drive for a picnic in the country. At their first stop, she says, “I give you Toshugo Shrine. To be in it is to be replenished, renewed. It's been exactly like this for 450 years. You know, I've photographed it a dozen times, and it still seems different to me. “
Looking at carvings, Tatia remarks that the shrine is an “island of serenity in this blood-spattered world.” Kelly says, “there are a lot of brilliant men in this world who believe firmly that for all its achievements, man will always be basically a murderous animal. I'm just grateful for the island of serenity."

Tatia replies, “but it could be everywhere. I believe in a world where man can be a friend to man. Where all the little people of the world can come together.”
Tatia explains about tying a bad fortune to a tree to lose it, then asks why Kelly is not married. “Who would want to marry a tennis bum?” he says.” Her reply, “you're not really a tennis bum. I know what you are” appears to indicate she's blown his cover, but then she adds, “you're a tennis champion.” Kelly answers lightly, “I wish you'd tell that to Tokyo National Bank.”

In response to Kelly's request to tell all about herself, Tatia reveals that her parents were White Russians named Lorvitsky who came from Petrograd and settled in America after living in Shanghai. “They spoiled me rotten ….. God bless the child …. “ she says.
Tatia tells of going to study Asian history in Tokyo, declaring, “I had no boyfriends, no gentlemen callers,” to which Kelly says, “All right! The wonderfulness of your virtue.” But she adds that when her parents died in quick succession, “I went on a campaign to die too. I kept falling in love. One man after another.” Kelly appears disturbed by what she is telling him, but she adds that she then cut off the loose behavior.

They go on a picnic, and Kelly states, “you will give me temples, I will give you waterfalls.” As a ploy, he tells her to get binoculars from the car' to view a deer. What she finds is a revolver. She points it at him, then tells him to put it away.
After lunch she questions him about the gun, asking if he might be in danger, and he learns that she is familiar with weapons, and knew his gun wasn't loaded. Later, in a wood, Kelly names the three missing agents, and Tatia admits photographing them. “Did you know them as well as you know me?” Kelly asks gravely.

He says that she might be investigated over her connection to Hanley, then queries whether she knew more about him. “Maybe not,” Tatia replies enigmatically. Seeing the look on his face, she says, “darling, I didn't even know you then.” "No," he responds with chagrin, and walks away.
She follows him, then tells Kelly, “I've fallen in love with a tennis bum.”
She asks him if he ever considered settling down, and he asks her if she could give up her present life. “For something lasting,” she responds. “I never had anything lasting,” Kelly says. “I haven't either,” Tatia tells him, and he nervously admits, “kinda feels like it's my move.”
Tatia tells Kelly that her former fiancé was killed doing work she knew nothing about, that he had been secretive, and she felt left out. “It's the closeness. That's what I need, Kelly” she explains. “I love you,” Kelly declares, adding with gravity, ”Tatia. I commit to you."
