Meanwhile, in her room, Tatia is being threatened with a letter opener to her throat. The assailant asks Tatia why she didn't take the two chances she had to kill Kelly. She replies that it would be better to get Kelly's code book, but the conspirator says that's obviously hopeless, and accuses her of being in love with Kelly. “An unreliable woman is dangerous, pussycat,” he says, and she breaks away from him.
“Don't pussycat me,” Tatia retorts, “I'm in this because I want to be, not for the money like you.” She insists that uncovering Kelly's intelligence network can't be rushed, but the conspirator reminds her it was always a kill mission. Tatia then points out that it was she who first made them suspect Kelly was an agent. “you have one night to make this love work for you,” he tells her, and puts a bug in the flowers. “Stating that he and a fellow agent will be in the next room, he says the small transmitter “will even pick up the sighs of a woman in love. But don't sigh too much, pussycat. It's very revealing.”

Playing totally against the anger and then pathos of the scene in Kelly's suite, as well as the betrayal and tension shortly before in Tatia's, when Kelly arrives, it is all sweetness and laughter between them. “For me?” she asks, eyeing the box of flowers he's brought. “well, there's nobody else here,” he answers hesitantly. “That's what they always say in the movies,” Tatia says demurely. “Yeah, but this is what they always do in the movies,” he answers, embracing her affectionately.

They repeat the byplay when he asks if the dinner arrangements she's made are for him, and the “what they do in the movies” happy hugging starts all over again. Then Tatia's laughter suddenly disappears, and she asks Kelly to hold her, even though they're already embracing. She asks him how serious their relationship is, and he, only half moving to her mood, says he's getting “seriouser by the second.” She tells him that she's received a cable, and has to leave for Saigon the next day.
Kelly remarks ironically that it would be unlikely he'd get a tennis match in Saigon, but she urges him to arrange something so they can be together. The scene is beginning to play out as he dreaded, and he kisses her, obviously trying to grasp on to the last remnants of his shattering love.

She goes on urging him to arrange something, asking if he might have “connections,” saying that she might get something valuable for such individuals. He implies that he might know some people, but continues to play innocent over what she means about information for connections.
She pursues the matter, and Kelly finally ventures disbelievingly , “you mean like espionage?” Tatia shows delight at his response. “That's no good,” he says, still in a jolly manner. But Tatia goes on that she's thought it all out.

While Kelly continues to play naiveté, Tatia says she has an intuition that he could arrange something. Telling him that she senses there's a part of himself that he can't share, Tatia says she just wants them to be together, and that she can accept anything except secrets between them.
“I just want to be your woman,” she whispers, “I don't want anything to come between us.” Drawing her to him, with great emotion, he says softly, “it won't.” Knowing that this is the end, he kisses her, and both declare their love with a definite amount of believability though they are betraying one another.

Breaking away from his feelings, Kelly says that he does have connections, and rises to put some distance between them. She seems pleased when he says he runs errands for them. He then returns to her side to hand her documents and money, supposedly from the American Embassy. “You did a wonderful job for us. So no more jokes,” he says to Tatia's total disbelief.
Her astonishment turns to horror, and she begins shouting hysterically that she was loyal and never had contact with the other side. She begs Kelly to confirm this, and screams into the flowers where the bug was hidden. Kelly gets up, displaying amazement. She begs him to come back and save her, but he gets up and leaves.

Outside in the hall, Kelly is numb. Scotty has brought in the police due to Tatia's involvement with the murders of the three agents. Kelly is silent as they walk away. “how'd you like to punch me in the mouth,” Scotty suggests to him, to break the tension. Kelly replies solemnly, “do me a favor. Don't talk.”
Scotty nevertheless dances around him, trying to get Kelly to hit him. Finally, in desperation, Kelly swings at Scotty, but misses. Scotty then picks him up and dusts Kelly off, and they walk away.
